Canadians fought with the British to stave off an American invasion of Upper Canada. thought these persons may side with the Americans because many of them were born in the United States and still had family there. The Americans who stayed loyal to Britain and fought alongside the British during the American Revolution were given land grants to settle in the Upper Canada region. It was heavily populated with American Loyalists and refugees after the American Revolutionary War. Upper Canada was a British colony at the time. More substantially there was a desire to end Native American aggression along the western frontier. Others draw attention to the fact that Americans had plenty of land to expand into and did not require or desire expansion into Canada. However, there are those who point out that the rich natural resources of the British colony would be valuable to the United States as a bargaining chip in later negotiations. That is, Americans only desired Canadian land. Some believe that it was an extension of Manifest Destiny.
